SpaceX is shifting its strategic focus toward becoming a data company capable of providing significant compute capacity for artificial intelligence. During an earnings call on Tuesday afternoon, company officials outlined plans to deploy up to 10 GW of compute on the ground by 2027.

The company’s messaging has moved away from previous goals centered on human missions to Mars and the settlement of the red planet. Instead, the current priority is artificial intelligence and the data infrastructure required to support its expansion.

Despite this pivot, the company’s long-term objectives for space-based data services remain dependent on the Starship vehicle. These services include the existing Starlink internet constellation and the future “Starmind” data center constellation.

During the call, SpaceX founder Elon Musk and company president and chief operating officer Gwynne Shotwell provided new performance targets for the Starship rocket. The vehicle remains central to the company’s ability to facilitate its space-based data ambitions.
